The Sculpture:The turbulent and beautiful muscularity of the torso embodies both maleness and human physicality, while the calm female face emerging from this form stands for the spiritual. One is subtly turning and twisting, the other utterly serene. I am reminded of the quintessential symbol of yin and yang which represents active and passive principles, male and female. Just as the black half of the symbol contains a white dot, and the white half a black dot, male containing female, female containing male, so my sculpted masculine torso contains its feminine counterpart.

On a purely personal level, though I didn't think about this when I made Emergent, I now believe my interest in this unusual subject reflects my own condition as an emerging sculptor, breaking out of the metaphorical body I knew before and remaking myself.

The rich rust-coloured patina of Emergent calls attention to the earthy, physical nature of the male torso, while highlighting the muscular details, again emphasizing its bodily aspect. The female face, on the other hand, is gold, a higher, purer form, and not from earth. The angular cut planes of the neck, arm, and knees, as well as the musculature of the legs, emulates the nature of cut stone. I have selected a black granite base, flecked with copper, called "Star Galaxy," which picks up the rust and gold colours of the piece while conveying a sense of floating in space at the beginning of creation.

The Story: I originally sculpted this piece to be my first representation of Eve's separation from Adam, a story I address in Eve's Awakening. However, its meaning to me has changed since. I now see it as a representation of the union of male and female principles as well as body and spirit to reflect the oneness of all things
