The Sculpture:
The overarching sense of the piece is one of strain and struggle. When
looking at this sculpture, and especially when running a hand over it,
one notices that it is a highly textured piece, covered in grit, cuts,
and striations that convey the stretching and straining of the figure
as he breaks free of the muck that confines him. As muscular as the figure
is, the task of being reborn is an immense struggle, apparent in the rise
of his arched back, in the subtle twist and rise of his neck and head,
and in his clenched fist and open hand that rakes at the earth. I have
chosen a dark brown base patina to express the heavy muddiness of the
restraining mire. However, the figure's body is highlighted in bright
gold tones where he has begun to break free.

The Story:
Resurrection is perhaps more of a directly personal and allegorical
piece than some of my other work; it represents the experience of returning
to sculpting after many years of suppressing my true joy. As I sculpted
Resurrection, I felt like I was bursting free of past limitations
and obstacles imposed on me by myself and others, rising out of the mire.
This is an accomplishment I wish for all of those who desire the freedom
to pursue their creative desires.
